Dodoma: President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan on Sunday assured Tanzanians that three investments and operations contracts between Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and DP World have taken into account public views and national interest.

President Samia made the affirmation after the signing ceremony at Chamwino State House in the Dodoma capital city.

She noted that the contracts which will last for 30-years will increase efficiency and performance of the Dar es Salaam Port.

“It is clear that all Tanzanians agree that there are challenges in terms of operations and performance at the Dar Port, but we have different views on how to address them,” she said.

Thus, she said, the government from time to time has been pumping financial resources for enhancing efficiency at the Dar es Salaam port but did not yield the expected results. Therefore, it opted to engage the private sector to increase the performance.

The contracts signed on Sunday are Host Government Agreement (HGA), Lease Operations of berth 4-7 and the joint operations of berth 0-3 for commercial and government activities.

President Samia said the government formed a negotiation team with the Dubai based DP World expressed satisfaction and appreciation for both parties arriving at an agreement that led to the contracts signing.

The contracts, she said, concern only some parts of the Dar es Salaam Port and not all operations or other Tanzanian ports.

Under these agreements the government will be receiving fees and payments from the DP world, increasing revenues and cutting down the operational costs while security at the port will remain in the government hands.

The government will channel the funds to the Dar es Salaam Port development and to other social services.

With the investment of the DP World, she said, the Dar es Salaam Port will be in a position to compete with neighbouring ports in Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa.

President Samia assured the current employees of their employments but they have a choice whether to remain with the TPA or move to the DP World side or to other local companies dealing with logistics and supply chain business.

She called upon Tanzanians to accord cooperation and support to the investors so that the country attains the anticipated economic gains.
