Zantel’s
new CEO, Sherif El Barbary shares a light moment with the Daily

headquarters in Dar es Salaam over the weekend. El Barbary used the
opportunity to guarantee Zantel customers quality services and taking
the firm to greater heights.

Telecom Public Limited Company – Zantel customers will be able to move
with the world trend in communication through data and voice after the
final completion of the network modernization and roll out of new
products and services into 2018.
Speaking at a press
conference in Dar es Salaam, Zantel new CEO Sherif El Barbary said he
aims in improving network quality and coverage serving the customers and
the country with the best in class services and value to steer Zantel
to new heights in the competitive telecom industry.
“We intend to follow
where our customers are and give them what they deserve by making sure
we manage costs and generate income aligning to our mission and vision.”
He said.
Mr. El Barbary added
that Zantel is at the final stage of its network modernization and it is
no doubt the best data provider in the country covering 22 regions with
4G infrastructure hence living their mission to Lead the adoption
of the digital lifestyle in the markets.
He also emphasized that
Zantel will work on supporting the government to reach the Sustainable
Development Goals targets in different aspects.
“We have created more
than 5,000 employment countrywide. This is direct and indirect
employment through our EzyPesa platform where we have more than 2,500
agents, we also have partners providing different services who also
employ staff to serve Zantel. This is apart from our super dealers who
have people working for them to distribute our products and services.”
He added.
On the CSR side, Zantel
has partnered with M-Health which is a non-government organization in
supporting and contributing to improve health care specifically maternal
and child health. With Internet connectivity comes access to data, as
well as ease in educating the public through different campaigns.
Other areas of focus
during his tenure is the Zantel Whole Sale and Enterprises business
which ikey for business. Zantel manages two fibre optic EASSy & SEAS
undersea cables with landing points at Zantel Park in Dar es Salaam.
These submarine cables connect to landlocked countries which no longer
have to rely on satellite Internet access to carry voice and data
services.
Improve the quality of the products and services including MFS product EzyPesa which is the 1st service
in the country to launch both conventional and the Mobile Islamic
Banking services in partnership with People’s Bank of Zanzibar in
Zanzibar, where 85% of our base resides.
“So we promise a bright future coming to our customers” added El Barbary.
Mr. Sherif El Barbary was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer on July 1st 2017.
Mr. El Barbary brings more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry,
garnered in a range of senior executive positions at leading international organizations.
Prior to joining Zantel,
El Barbary has been a Chief Technical and Information Officer for Tigo
in Chad since March 2016, in charge of network and IT operations and
performance; he was also acting General Manager in Chad for 3 months at
the beginning of the year.
El Barbary spent 6 years
at Huawei, before joining Millicom, in charge of managed services and
solutions for the Middle East and North Africa region. He also spent 6
years as COO for Glextel, a service provider of wireless and fixed
networks, overseeing the 10 operations of the company across Africa and
the Middle East.
He also worked for
Lucent Technologies and then spent a few years in North America working
for Hewlett Packard, CML and Telus where he gained commercial experience
as Head of Channel Operations.
Sherif El Barbary fills
in the position that was being held by Mr. Benoit Janin for one and 10
months. Zantel has been in operation since 1999 with current 85%
Millicom shareholding and 15% Zanzibar government shares.
